Cardfight!! Vanguard - Chaos Breaker Dragon/"Messiah" Deck June16

Ever since I played against CBD in the pre-Springfest tournament I've grown a huge interest in the deck, its super expensive at the moment so its taken me a while to get my hands on it...

Here's my take on the deck =)

THE DECK

CBD had always been a strong deck on its own but fell out in favour of Messiahs in the G generation. However the deck shot right back up after its support in Fighters Collection in the form of Chaos Universe.


Traditional the way to play around Link Jokers is to only call rear guards when necessary so they will generally have nothing to lock somewhat controlling what they can do, this is where Chaos Universe says "no", he forces the opponent to lock a card from their hand to an open rear guard circle of choice (you can lock an extra card on the field on GB2). The deck generally plays around this skill with the other Star-Vader cards to set up chain locking and free draws via CBD himself.

The whole "lock" mechanic is actually counter-productive to a game based on attacking to progress, CBD essentially puts games in to a time slowed/paused state. The goal is to lock both your opponents rear guards in the front row sealing rear guard attacks meaning as long as you have the cards to guard the vanguard attack your untouchable.

Think this: your opponent has to guard 3 columns of attacks while you only need to guard 1 (vanguard), assuming all your columns hit and your in stride your opponent needs to drop a minimum of 4 cards each turn versus 2~ yourself. It's a battle of resources which you will eventually win simply because you don't need to drop as many cards.

There are typically 2 builds for CBD; pure Star-Vaders only or with Messiah "techs". The Messiah hybrids were largely popularized from Japan and for those that don't know, I much prefer Jap builds over English builds largely because they're usually more aggressive in style and in my opinion provoke smarter plays. How? The difference between the pure and Messiah builds is extra offense vs consistency. Pure CBD is more consistent because every card is a Star-Vader making costs such as "soul blast a Star-Vader" or "counter blast a Star-Vader" effortless to pay. CBD/Messiah on the other hand opens up the option to be more aggressive on Amnesty turns with Arrester and in return requires more planning and more luck (when you soul charge for CBD). And in case you were wondering about the interaction between Amnesty Messiah and Arrester Messiah; it goes something like this.

1 - Arrestor column attacks, effect > Lock himself & lock another unit (usually his booster)
2 - Amnesty attacks, effect > Unlock Arrestor column, basically you get an extra attack (an unlocked unit counts as a new unit).

This is a very strong option to have to end the game with after starving your opponent of resources/plays for several turns. Basically try to remember what your opponent drive checked the previous turn and then card count. Assume you have 2 rear guard columns; 1 Arrestor column and another column and both columns are able to hit the vanguard. The Arrestor column will lock/unlock, pseudo "restands" so that's 3 rear guard attacks and 1 vanguard attack. Your opponent needs a minimum of 4 cards to shield your rear guards and another 2 cards for your vanguard which is a total of 6 cards in hand minimum assuming you don't get triggers and every card in your opponent's has the required shield value.

This is the one play that differs the Messiah build from pure and IMO is well worth it because:

1 - If you know your opponent has insufficient guard value this play can potentially win you the game or give you a huge momentum swing.
2 - Basically whoever pulls this play off at the right time in the mirror match wins because it undoes all your opponent's efforts of locking your field and you make them use more resources with multi-attacks.

Honestly there's not too much to talk about for this deck, its quite hard to write about it since the deck is not easy to play and combos/plays differ from player to player. However the few tips I have for both playing and playing against this deck:

Playing this deck -

1 - Keep track of your counter blasts and soul so you have adequate resources to pay for costs, what cards and how many cards are left in your deck.
2 - Plan ahead which cards to keep locked, what to unlock and retire/not retire for CBD, Universe and your rear guard skills.
3 - Keep track of what your opponent drive checks and card count in order to make the correct play at the right time.


Playing against this deck - 

1 - If CBD will be striding first place 2 units in the front row; this way your opponent can't Universe the front and you have a higher chance of having 1 column rear guard attack vs both columns locked.
2 - If you have units with resist place them in the front row and leave the circle behind empty. CBD will not be able to Universe the front row since the circles are occupied, units with resist cannot be targeted for card effects and an empty back circle means they can't Big Crunch.
3 - Rush them even if you play a GB deck it sucks to play combo cards early as vanillas. CBD is a combo deck where most of their rear guards effect only go off once the moment they are played so force them to drop those cards early; force them to play from behind.
